Mbeki in Nigeria for Yar’Adua’s inauguration

South African President, Thabo Mbeki, is to attend the inauguration ceremony of president-elect, Alhaji Umaru Yar’Adua, in Abuja today.

According to a statement issued by the Pretoria government and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Mbeki would depart Pretoria, South Africa early today to arrive Abuja in time for the ceremony.

The statement said Mbeki was attending the inauguration ceremony as part of South Africa’s commitment to consolidate political, economic and trade relations with Nigeria.

It was also in line with efforts aimed at the consolidation of the African agenda, the statement added.

Earlier in his congratulatory message to Yar ‘adua, Mbeki expressed South Africa’s intention to continue to forge closer working relations between the two countries and to build a better Africa and the world.

Mbeki also assured Nigeria of his country’s readiness to extend a hand of solidarity with the people of Nigeria.
